This position is located at the SC Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) - Office of Mental Health, Public Safety Division, 7901 Farrow Rd, Columbia SC 29203. These positions will be in a hospital setting.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma and experience performing patrol or investigative duties with a public law enforcement agency.
  • Two (2) years of experience in law enforcement.
  • Must have certification through SC Department of Public Safety in accordance with statue 23-23-40 of code of laws SC 1976.

Nice To Haves

  • A bachelor's degree may be substituted for the required law enforcement experience.
  • Bilingual abilities in English and Spanish (or another language) are a plus.
  • Knowledge of state laws, agency regulations and facilities rules and requirements.
  • Ability to establish and maintain a satisfactory professional relationship with staff, patients and visitors, entering these grounds.
  • Ability to adjust to fluctuating situations, disturbances, while enforcing rules/regulations.
  • Ability to work fluctuating hours.
  • Have considerable knowledge of State Laws, rules, and regulations of the South Carolina Department of Behavorial Health and Developmental Disabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and supervise Public Safety Officers in maintaining surveillance of the Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities grounds, by routine checking doors, windows and fence and conducting routine searches of patients, employees and visitors.
  • Coordinate and supervise Public Safety Officers in investigating reports of patient abuse, employees misconduct, missing or stolen property, complaints of visitors, deaths, suicidal attempts, and altercations where patients, staff, or visitors are injured.
  • Interview suspects, victims and witness to develop and secure information to be used in legal and administrative proceedings.
  • Prepare detailed reports to include diagrams and photographs, pursue charges and make arrest as required.
  • Coordinate and supervise the assisting of treatment personnel with highly distributed patients when they become unmanageable.
  • Transport unmanageable and court unit patients to clinics and Probate Court Hearing.
  • Maintain order by observing suspicious persons or unusual incidents or enforces hospital rules, regulations and policies, as well as state laws.
  • Conduct routine property checks as needed, when buildings are not occupied.
  • Ensure that patients are properly searched and restrained acquired during transports.
  • Maintain applicable records, logs and incident reports.
  • Conduct routine searches of visitors, employees, packages and vehicles as required.
  • Be on call as needed, work shifts as requires, carryout job assignments as directed by supervisor and work overtime as needed.
