Temporary Law Clerk (Probate Court)

About The Position

Law students who operate directly under the guidance of the judge to prepare for court proceedings, and who engage in research, drafting, and assist with case management for specified durations.

Requirements

  • Two (2) years of experience performing clerical, statistical or court related duties.
  • Bachelor’s degree and a 3rd Level Law student from the University of Memphis.
  • Knowledge of the various legal instruments issued by the court.
  • Ability to maintain an established system of records and files.
  • Ability to work with court officials.
  • Ability to use a personal computer.
  • Strong legal research, excellent writing abilities, and proficiency in bluebook citation.
  • Ability to write legibly on legal documents and court files.
  • Good communication skills and organizational skills.
  • Ability to perform accurate arithmetical computations.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares dockets or calendars of cases to be called in the assigned courtroom.
  • Attends court sessions, hearings, and trials, taking notes and assisting with procedures.
  • Explains procedures or forms to the requested parties.
  • Secures information for judges, contacts witnesses, attorneys, and litigants to obtain information for court and instruct parties when to appear in court.
  • Provides information for various state and County offices as required.
  • Conducts deep, accurate research on complex legal issues using tools like Westlaw/Lexis, and draft concise, well-organized memoranda and proposed decisions for the judge's review.
  • Records case dispositions and court orders.
  • Maintains high standards of integrity and confidentiality in all chamber matters.
  • Enters various court information into computer; editing and deleting same as required.
  • Performs other related duties as directed.
