About The Position

The Law Clerk II will be a member of the Labour & Employment Legal Team reporting to the Managing Counsel, Canadian HR Legal but will also support the other members of the Labour & Employment Legal Team. The Labor & Employment team consists of lawyers and legal professionals in both Canada and the U.S. focused on providing advice and counsel to the global Human Resources function and leading litigation on all global labour and employment matters.

Requirements

  • Paralegal/Law Clerk diploma/certificate from a recognized educational institution or equivalent work experience at a reputable law firm or legal department.
  • At least 3 years paralegal/law clerk experience or equivalent.
  • Background in employment litigation, and/or general litigation experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of legal and court documents and procedures.
  • Knowledge of standard office equipment and word processing.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients and court/tribunal staff.
  • Excellent legal drafting skills and eye for detail.
  • Motivated self-starter with ability to work productively under pressure and deliver business results.
  • Strong interpersonal & client service skills; professional and positive demeanor.
  • Superior organization & priority setting skills, strong work ethic and ability to mutli-task.
  • Conceptual and creative problem-solving skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Background in employment litigation, and/or general litigation experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Draft standard legal documents, correspondence and pleadings for review by lawyer(s).
  • Edit grammar, punctuation and spelling as needed.
  • Prepare affidavit of documents for review by lawyers and arrange and manage undertakings chart.
  • Organize and prepare files for discovery/questioning, all as may be needed from time to time.
  • Follow up on undertakings and production requests.
  • Exercise initiative and judgment in a lawyer’s absence, where appropriate, i.e. negotiates extensions of time.
  • Prioritize and respond to diverse incoming communications.
  • Review and analyze new file assignments, organize file contents.
  • Update/post in electronic systems all relevant work completed on a file.
  • Provide various reports from electronic systems to the Managing Counsel as necessary.
  • Provide client service to both internal and external clients.
  • Answer a wide variety of telephone inquiries based on knowledge of case.
  • Respond to inquiries exercising good judgment and discretion.
  • Respond to written or telephone inquiries with a standard letter.
  • Compose and prepare routine inquiries.
  • Establish, maintain and when necessary, revise lawyers' files.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of standard office precedents and procedures.
  • Adhere to appropriate ethics of the role; follow and comply with company policies and methodologies.
  • Ensure information is provided and shared with appropriate individuals in a timely fashion.
  • Remain current with developments in the law.
