About The Position

The Roderick and Solange MacArthur Justice Center (MJC) is seeking committed students for summer internships. MJC is accepting applications from current 1L and 2L law students for summer internships in Chicago, Illinois, and New Orleans, Louisiana, and for current 2L students in Washington, D.C. These are hybrid internships, requiring students to spend 2-3 days per week in the office and reside within commuting distance. A full-time commitment of 40 hours per week for 10 weeks is preferred, but 8 weeks may be considered. MJC is a national nonprofit civil rights organization representing people harmed by America’s criminal legal system through litigation and advocacy. They focus on issues from policing to wrongful convictions and the death penalty.

Requirements

  • JD students in good standing
  • Commitment to transformational justice
  • Commitment to cultural competence required to work with clients, co-workers, and community partners who come from different backgrounds and experiences

  • A writing sample (preferably a legal analytical writing sample, such as a brief or memo)

Responsibilities

  • Draft legal briefs and memoranda
  • Work with clients and organizations
  • Conduct community outreach
  • Research case law
  • Draft discovery
  • Participate in expert discovery
  • Prepare for depositions
  • Attend court hearings
  • Conduct research, drafting, discovery, and other similar tasks on pending cases
  • Contribute to ongoing appellate cases
  • Participate in strategy discussions
  • Perform legal research
  • Draft sections of briefs and other filings
  • Gain exposure to the broader appellate process
  • Participate in client meetings and strategic decision-making
  • Case evaluation and analysis of factual records
  • Participate in moot oral arguments

Benefits

  • Stipend up to $1000 per week (offset by any external funding) if ineligible for or do not receive funding from law school
