About The Position

The Law Clerk position is a great opportunity for recent law school graduates seeking to gain practical, hands-on experience applying your knowledge to assist with high profile cases being investigated and litigated by the Department of Justice. This opportunity is working with a team of litigation support professionals supporting the Civil Division of the Department of Justice. Individuals will focus on Claims Review (Eligibility, Fast Track, and Non-Economic Loss). You will also enhance your knowledge and understanding of the litigation life cycle as you assist with investigations from discovery through trial and appeal. Requirements

  • Law degree, or currently attending an ABA-accredited law school, having completed at least one year of study.
  • Sound working knowledge of federal and state court systems, legal research procedures, and legal research resources.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and thorough knowledge of legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw.
  • Hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications, including word processing, databases (such as document review and file management systems), spreadsheets, and imaging.
  • Hands-on familiarity with ESI tools and knowledge of eDiscovery procedures and resources.
  • Experience in reviewing, evaluating, and analyzing claims, with the ability to apply established criteria to determine legal sufficiency.
  • Experience in analyzing and organizing documents for supporting evidence and determining mechanisms to perfect insufficient claims.
  • Strong Excel skills with experience using complex workbooks.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, including experience working with the public (claimants) and with external attorneys (claimants’ legal representatives).
  • Excellent research and writing skills, demonstrated experience working with complex statutory and regulatory schemes, and flexibility and creativity in the application of existing policies.
  • DOJ MBI must be obtainable (US Citizenship required).

Responsibilities

  • Work as a part of a high-performing team supporting the Victim Compensation Fund project where you will be able to hone your analytical and research skills by engaging in intensive document reviews to identify relevant documents and to conduct legal and factual research case.
