About The Position

The Law Clerk I provides legal research, analytical, and litigation support services to Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) and supervisory attorneys in support of the client under a federal government contract. The position supports both criminal and civil matters, including complex and time-sensitive litigation, habeas corpus proceedings, and immigration-related cases. Law Clerk I functions under attorney supervision and in compliance with all applicable federal laws, regulations, and contract requirements.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school
  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Ability to successfully obtain and maintain adjudication for the required background investigation
  • Valid state driver’s license
  • Minimum of two (2) years of professional work experience
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Experience and expertise performing services comparable to those described in this position
  • Ability to make sound, independent decisions on short notice and adapt to changing priorities
  • Must reside within a reasonable commuting distance of the supported USAO office

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience supporting DOJ, USAO, or other federal litigation environments
  • Experience with habeas corpus or immigration related matters
  • Familiarity with federal court filing systems and case management processes

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct legal support to assigned AUSAs and/or supervisory attorneys by identifying and analyzing applicable administrative, statutory, and regulatory law.
  • Research and identify potential defenses, violations, causes of action, and legal issues relevant to assigned cases.
  • Develop and maintain a working knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, as well as current criminal and civil rules and procedures.
  • Review, analyze, and interpret information contained in case files and timely alert AUSAs to potential legal, procedural, or factual issues.
  • Support litigation related to 28 U.S.C. § 2255 (habeas corpus) and immigration habeas matters, including: Receiving, logging, and docketing pleadings and filings; Calendaring court ordered deadlines and statutory due dates; Coordinating with AUSAs and support staff to locate case files and records; Drafting responses and legal memoranda for attorney review; Assisting with timely filing of court documents in accordance with applicable rules.
  • Conduct in depth legal research and analysis of statutes, legislative history, judicial precedents, agency rules, regulations, and legal scholarship, including matters that are complex, novel, or unprecedented.
  • Brief AUSAs on pertinent facts, procedural posture, legal issues, and relevant case law.
  • Draft legal correspondence, memoranda, pleadings, and other documents for attorney signature.
  • Prepare proposed orders for review and submission to judges and magistrates.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of litigation, case management, and contract objectives.
