About The Position

The Law Clerk – Health Law will provide high-level legal and administrative support to the assigned lawyer(s) in the Health Law practice group. The role will ensure the efficient and organized management of client files, preparation of legal documents, and proactive support to lawyers handling complex tort litigation work. A strong interest in health law is essential, though prior health law experience is not required. The ideal candidate will have over 3 (three) years of experience working in a similar position. This is a Hybrid position and requires a minimum of 3 days in office or as required.

Requirements

  • Law Clerk Diploma or equivalent education and experience.
  • 3 - 5 years in a legal environment, preferably in litigation.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; experience with legal document management systems; familiarity with legal research tools and case management software.
  • Anticipates needs, takes ownership of tasks, and offers solutions.
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple files simultaneously.
  • Clear and professional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Understanding of litigation processes.
  • Uses discretion and critical thinking to make sound decisions.
  • Able to troubleshoot and resolve administrative and procedural issues.
  • Exercises discretion when handling sensitive information and interacts with clients and external parties with professionalism and respect.

Nice To Haves

  • Health law experience is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of Relativity and ACL is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Manage client files throughout their lifecycle, ensuring documents are accurately saved, organized, and maintained in accordance with firm protocols.
  • Apply sound judgment and file knowledge to anticipate next steps and proactively identify potential issues or risks.
  • Implement and monitor a bring-forward system to ensure timely follow-up and tracking of deadlines and commitments, including milestone reporting.
  • Coordinate collection, review, organization, and production of documents (including medical records), ensuring proper indexing and ongoing updates.
  • Draft affidavits of documents and support ongoing disclosure obligations.
  • Review discovery transcripts, track undertakings, and follow up to ensure timely completion.
  • Prepare case materials including briefs, chronologies, casebooks, and evidentiary summaries.
  • Assist with all aspects trial and regulatory hearing preparation and execution.
  • Identify and coordinate expert witnesses, including drafting correspondence, scheduling, and preparing materials for review.
  • Arrange third-party services (e.g., IMEs, surveillance, assessments).
  • Communicate professionally with clients, regulators, general counsel, opposing counsel, and third parties to obtain information, confirm timelines, and advance files.
  • Coordinate with plaintiff and co-defendant counsel to obtain productions.
  • Prepare correspondence, reporting letters, and status updates for lawyer review.
  • Draft closing and file resolution documentation.
  • Conduct legal research as needed.
  • Assist with billing processes, including preparation of invoices, budgets, and fee estimates.
