About The Position

The Machine Lathe Operator sets up and runs manual machining equipment to make, repair, and fit metal parts. This role focuses on safe work, accurate measurements, standard work methods, and continuous improvement to reduce defects and waste.

Requirements

  • 2 to 3 years of manual machining experience in a shipyard, marine, or heavy equipment environment.
  • Experience with precision grinding and working to close tolerances.
  • Strong mechanical skills and understanding of machine operation.
  • Ability to read blueprints, drawings, and work instructions.
  • Good attention to detail and careful measurement habits.
  • Ability to solve problems, find causes of errors, and support process improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Run lathes, mills, drill presses, and other shop equipment safely and correctly.
  • Read drawings, blueprints, and work instructions to understand part requirements.
  • Measure parts with calipers, micrometers, gauges, and other tools to confirm they meet specifications.
  • Help set up machines and check that equipment is ready for accurate, repeatable work.
  • Keep the work area clean, organized, and safe at all times.
  • Work with the outside machinist and complete work on vessels when needed.
  • Follow standard work methods to improve consistency and reduce mistakes.
  • Identify process problems, report root causes, and help improve quality and cycle time.
  • Record work completed and maintain accurate production and inspection records.
  • Use knowledge of marine products, tools, equipment, and materials to support the job.
  • Work with supervisors and technical staff to solve machining and quality issues.
  • Set up and align horizontal and vertical lathes, mills, boring machines, drill presses, band saws, grinders, and hand tools.
  • Use precision measuring tools correctly and verify results before releasing parts.
  • Machine metal parts to close tolerances using correct speeds, feeds, layouts, and shop calculations.
  • Secure the work area at the end of each shift to reduce the risk of loss or theft.
  • Handle and store hazardous materials correctly.
  • Wear the required personal protective equipment.
  • Follow health, safety, and industry standards.
  • Perform other assigned duties as needed.
