About The Position

Nemours Children's Health is seeking a Language Interpreter to provide interpreter services and some written translations in inpatient, outpatient, and emergency care areas at Nemours Children’s Hospital in Orlando, Florida. The interpreter provides consecutive, simultaneous, and sight translation services, interpreting spoken language for patients, families, and hospital staff to support safe and reliable communication.

The role provides Spanish interpretation using medical interpreter protocols and practice standards, identifies linguistic and cultural barriers for people with limited English proficiency, and translates written materials into Spanish as requested. The interpreter participates in departmental and hospital quality assessment and improvement programs, identifies opportunities to improve services, makes recommendations, and implements appropriate actions. Once certified, the interpreter completes continuing education to maintain certification credentials.

Requirements

• High school diploma.
• Pass a language proficiency test.
• Complete 40 hours of interpreter training specifically related to healthcare.
• At least three years of professional language interpreter experience.
• Speak, read, and write Spanish and English fluently.
• Possess national medical interpreter certification or be able to obtain it within six months of the start date.

Nice To Haves

• Certified Medical Interpreter (CMI) or Core Certification Healthcare Interpreter (CCHI).

Responsibilities

• Provide Spanish interpretation for patients and hospital staff in accordance with medical interpreter protocols and practice standards.
• Convert spoken messages into equivalent messages in the target language without adding, omitting, or changing meaning.
• Identify linguistic and cultural barriers to effective communication for customers with limited English proficiency whose primary language is not English.
• Participate in departmental and hospital quality assessment and improvement programs; identify service-improvement opportunities, make recommendations, and implement appropriate actions.
• Translate written material into Spanish as requested.
• Complete continuing education to maintain certification credentials once certified.
