Reno-Sparks Indian Colony: What drives us The Reno-Sparks Indian Colony represents descendants of three Great Basin Indigenous peoples: the Numu (Northern Paiute), Newe (Western Shoshone), and Washeshu (Washoe). These communities lived in harmony with the land for generations before European contact, following seasonal cycles and forming small, efficient social groups for survival. Each group’s name means “The People” in their own language, reflecting their deep cultural identity and connection to the Earth. They maintained strong traditions, respected neighboring tribes, and engaged in trade throughout the region. Today, the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony continues to honor these traditions while supporting the well-being, culture, and future of its tribal community. Your day to day as a Language Assistant As a Full-Time Language Assistant at the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony, you will play a pivotal role under the supervision of the Education Director, collaborating closely with Language and Culture Coordinators. Your main responsibility will be to assist in the development of innovative language and cultural instruction across various settings, including the Head Start Program, Child Care Program, Recreation facilities, Senior Center, Pow Wow Grounds, Youth Centers, Community Centers, and local Elementary Schools. This position is vital for the revitalization of language and cultural heritage, as you will facilitate and coordinate engaging language programs with Seniors, Elders, Parents/Guardians, and the broader Tribal Community. Your efforts will foster intergenerational connections and ensure that cultural traditions are passed down, enriching the community and promoting a strong sense of identity.
