About The Position

The Landscape Specialist is responsible for the planning, installation, maintenance, and enhancement of the Zoo’s landscaped grounds, gardens, exhibit plantings, and public spaces. This is a seasonal, non-benefited, hourly, non-exempt position. The mission of Binder Park Zoo is to connect people with nature and inspire them to conserve. We are passionate about educating on wildlife conservation and looking for enthusiastic people to be a part of the journey. Nestled in 433 acres of serene landscape, and home to over 70 different species, we are the third largest zoo in Michigan. Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Relate positively with diverse groups of people including guests, staff, volunteers, vendors.
  • Must have a strong work ethic and be detail oriented.
  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a group.
  • Ability to plan, organize and handle multiple tasks as necessary.
  • Must be able to adapt to changing assignments, environment and maintain a positive attitude.
  • Ability to operate various types of power equipment including lawnmowers, trimmers, leaf blowers and other landscaping equipment.
  • Comply with all Binder Park Zoo policies and procedures.
  • Uphold the high appearance standards set forth by Binder Park Zoo.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to sit, stand, bend, lift and move intermittently.
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English in order to fulfill job functions in an understandable way.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to maneuver on stairs, high places, and ladders.
  • Ability to use required tools for each job in daily operations.

Responsibilities

  • Planting, weeding, pruning, watering flower beds, and mulching.
  • Daily communication with Zoo Administration to relay pertinent information and updates.
  • Monitor all assigned areas for upkeep.
  • Maintain equipment including landscaping equipment and power tools.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Know and practice safe work procedures and report all unsafe conditions to supervisor.
  • Participate in individual and team-oriented zoo projects as needed.
  • Evaluate and replenish necessary supplies.
  • Properly operate zoo vehicles as needed.
