About The Position

The Water & Engineering Technology department is seeking a temporary Landscape Specialist 1. This position performs grounds maintenance and assists with landscaping design and specialty maintenance tasks for Clean Water Services (CWS). This is a temporary position, expected to last up to six months, with full-time hours (up to 40 per week). Any offer of employment is conditional upon successful completion of references, a driving record review, criminal background check, and a medical exam and drug screening. Requirements

  • Knowledge of capabilities, use, and routine maintenance of hand- and power-operated landscaping tools and equipment
  • Knowledge of irrigation system methods and components
  • Knowledge of landscaping principles and practices
  • Knowledge of pertinent safety practices and procedures
  • Knowledge of pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations pertaining to the use of pesticides, landscape products and equipment in the course of work
  • Knowledge of record-keeping principles and practices
  • Skill in use of hand tools and power equipment for landscaping maintenance and installation
  • Skill in landscaping maintenance
  • Skill in operation, maintenance, and repair of irrigation systems
  • Skill in use of computers and computer software for record keeping and office applications
  • Skill in keeping accurate reports and records
  • Ability to maintain accurate logs and records of work performed
  • Ability to operate specialized maintenance and repair equipment related to the area of assignment.
  • Ability to safely and effectively use and operate hand tools, mechanical equipment, power tools, and equipment required for the work
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including a variety of CWS staff and other government officials, community groups, and the general public
  • Ability to operate effectively in a team environment
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • 2 years of experience in landscape maintenance, nursery, ecological restoration, or a related field of work
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Possess and maintain a valid state-issued driver’s license.
  • Pesticide Apprentice license required within 6 months of hire.
  • Possess and maintain a valid state-issued Class A Commercial Driver’s License at the time of hire or have the ability to obtain one within 12 months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with grounds maintenance, including mowing, raking, edging, trimming, pruning shrubs, repairing damaged trees, making and repairing tree wells, and watering and weeding various shrubs and flower beds.
  • Assists with diagnosing landscape health, evaluating appropriate methods of care, mixing chemicals and fertilizers according to a predetermined formula, and operating hand sprayers to apply chemicals and fertilizers, herbicides, and insecticides for insect control and grounds maintenance.
  • Assists with the operation, maintenance, and repair of irrigation systems, including timers, valves, sprinkler heads, and irrigation lines, tests systems for proper operation, and conducts regular inspections of systems to ensure proper functioning; assists with the planning and design of irrigation system upgrades.
  • Operates a variety of hand and power tools and equipment related to work assignments, such as commercial mowing equipment, high-pressure cleaners, edgers, blowers, and chainsaws.
  • Performs general inventory control to account for all supplies, tools, and equipment.
  • Maintains and organizes supplies and stock and ensures that all hand and power tools are accounted for and in safe and usable condition.
  • Assists with coordinating the work of contractors performing grounds maintenance to assure contract provisions are being met.
  • Learns appropriate documentation and record-keeping methods including herbicide/pesticide spray logs in accordance with applicable statutes, regulations, CWS policy, guidance, and records retention schedule.
  • Drives a CWS or personal vehicle for work-related purposes.
