About The Position

To perform a wide variety of landscape maintenance functions related to but not limited to mowing, trimming, irrigation, edging, pruning landscape install, and snow removal (in snow markets). The essential general duties and responsibilities include working in and around various landscaping settings, communicating with lead people on task progress, learning aspects of installation work and basic planting skills, pruning trees, shrubs, and vines, identifying plants, weeds, and pests, performing basic irrigation repairs, operating landscape maintenance and construction hand tools and light equipment, reporting equipment in need of repair, understanding and practicing safety, and maintaining a neat and professional appearance while wearing company uniforms. Specific duties are assigned by supervisors in categories such as mowing, pruning, bed care, landscape installation, fertilization, irrigation, cleaning, and snow removal.

Requirements

• Must be at least 18 years of age and meet all applicable state-mandated labor laws.
• 1-year experience in the landscape industry preferred.
• Knowledge of Mainscape Standards of Excellence.
• Ability to comprehend instructions.
• Ability to use assigned tools and equipment in a proper/safe manner.
• Ability to become proficient in the use of basic maintenance hand tools: leaf rake, broom, hoe, shovel, cultivator, water hose, quick coupler key, hand pruners, hedge shears, and refuse tote.
• Ability to become proficient in the use of basic power equipment used for landscape maintenance: hedge trimmers, line trimmers, 21" lawn mower, and leaf blower.
• Ability to learn and perform basic planting skills.
• Ability to assist in keeping the job site tidy/safe.
• Ability to become proficient in loading and unloading of truck and trailer used in landscape maintenance operations.
• Ability to perform regular safety inspections on vehicle and trailer.
• Ability to adhere to company policies, standards, and safety guidelines.
• Ability to work with other employees as a team.
• Ability to meet or exceed company production rates and standards.
• Ability to communicate with lead people regarding progress of tasks.
• Regularly required to have full range of mobility in upper and lower body, stooping, standing, bending over, sitting, kneeling, squatting, and walking for extended periods.
• Able to reach over head with hands and arms; climb or balance.
• Able to use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls.
• Able to lift, pull, and push materials and equipment.
• Able to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds regularly and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.
• Maintain physical fitness level necessary to complete assigned job tasks.
• Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
• Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.
• The noise level in the work environment is usually high and requires ear protection while operating equipment.

Responsibilities

• Perform a wide variety of landscape maintenance functions including mowing, trimming, irrigation, edging, pruning, landscape installation, and snow removal.
• Work in and around various landscaping settings, including direct contact with plant and landscaping materials and exposure to dust, noise, and weather conditions.
• Communicate with lead people regarding the progress of tasks.
• Learn aspects of installation work and assist where needed or assigned.
• Learn and perform basic planting skills.
• Prune trees, shrubs, and vines to encourage healthy growth.
• Identify by common names 25 frequently used plants and 5 frequently seen weeds, garden pests, and differentiate weed grasses from desirable turf grasses.
• Understand and complete basic irrigation repairs such as sprinkler head replacement and adjustment, and lateral line repairs.
• Operate landscape maintenance and construction hand tools and light equipment.
• Report equipment in need of repair and identify broken, poorly running, and misused equipment.
• Understand and practice safety in all work circumstances and wear appropriate PPE at all times.
• Maintain a neat and clean appearance and conduct yourself in a professional manner.
• Wear Mainscape uniforms while at work.
• Operate various types of mowers (push, walk-behind with Velke, zero-turn riding mowers).
• Operate string trimmers, blowers, and edgers.
• Perform trash/debris pickup and proper set up/dispersal of crew members on job site.
• Use ladders, gas-powered hedge trimmers, loppers/hand pruners, and chain saws for pruning.
• Recognize plants that need special pruning needs/times.
• Properly apply pre-emergent, selective, and non-selective herbicides.
• Identify desirable plants from weeds in a specific area, pull and spray weeds, and mix chemicals.
• Safely lift/move heavy items and know how to install plants properly.
• Apply granular fertilizers after proper training under supervision.
• Use and calibrate the Z-cart for fertilization.
• Apply herbicides, fungicide, and insecticide.
• Replace sprinkler heads/nozzles, dig and clear drain/irrigation trenches, work with solvents and glues, track wires, and problem-solve irrigation issues.
• Use trenching equipment.
• Safely use cleaning supplies and solvents.
• Safely use snow removal equipment and practice safe driving techniques in snow and ice conditions.
• Shovel snow, lifting up to 25 pounds.
