About The Position

The Landfill Manager position is responsible for overseeing and coordinating landfill operations and employees to ensure that performance goals are met while maintaining compliance with EPA and other state/local agency regulations. The Landfill Manager is also responsible for the adherence to landfill operating standards, development of supervisory goals and objectives, and management of labor hours and expenses. The Landfill Manager ensures the highest standards of environmental safety and environmental compliance are met while minimizing operational costs and maximizing productivity.

Requirements

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in Windows/Microsoft applications. Excellent customer relations and personnel leadership skills
  • Must be able to read and understand landfill set grades using a surveyor’s instrument & must be familiar with EPA requirements regarding landfills
  • Must successfully complete United States Department of Transportation (DOT) Hazardous Materials Awareness, Security and Function Specific Training with renewal every three years
  • Must successfully complete hazardous waste management training, as provided in the Personnel Training Plan for Hazardous Waste Job Duties, within six months of employment or assignment to the facility, along with an annual review of the initial training
  • Must have waste industry experience
  • Must have previous management experience involving managing P&L
  • Minimum 5 years landfill experience or equivalent
  • Must be able to pass state EPA certification
  • Legally eligible to work in the United States
  • Valid driver’s license (if applicable)
  • Must successfully complete pre-employment testing
  • Must be able to read and speak the English language

Nice To Haves

  • 5 years experience operating heavy equipment preferred
  • Construction background a plus
  • Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) certification, preferred

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute the landfill operational business plan to include all program requirements, labor hours, cycle production costs, images/blueprints and long-term facility needs
  • Provide overall leadership for landfill operations, ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, environmental requirements, and company policies
  • Drive operational excellence through the analysis of production, quality, and performance metrics, implementing corrective actions and continuous improvement initiatives as needed
  • Implement landfill development plans, meet facility needs, and recommend equipment needs
  • Lead landfill development and capital planning efforts, including recommending equipment and infrastructure investments to support business objectives
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with internal departments, vendors, and external partners to ensure effective coordination of landfill activities and resources
  • Review production and operating reports and drive resolution of problems accordingly
  • Lead a team of landfill employees and conduct performance evaluations, monitor and track employee attendance, complete disciplinary actions/meetings, and complete all other required documentation relating to performance management
  • Oversee workforce planning and resource allocation to ensure staffing levels and schedules support operational requirements
  • Champion a culture of safety and regulatory compliance by ensuring adherence to all applicable policies, procedures, and documentation requirements
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Maintain understanding of hazardous waste accumulation areas within operations and the types of hazardous waste generated and managed
  • Demonstrate familiarity with the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Contingency Plan and serve as an Emergency Coordinator to assist in emergency response activities as needed
  • Ensure all employees involved in hazardous waste management receive appropriate training in accordance with regulatory requirements
  • Verify that all required hazardous waste inspections are completed and documented within the prescribed timeframes
  • Oversee the proper packaging, labeling, handling, and shipping of hazardous wastes, including reviewing and signing hazardous waste manifests
  • Maintain all hazardous waste documentation and records as required by regulatory agencies and internal policies
  • Ensure that corrective actions related to hazardous waste management are identified, promptly addressed, documented, and closed out
