About The Position

Duke University Health System - Pickens Family Medicine Clinic seeks to hire an experienced Registered Nurse - Lactation Consultant, who will embrace our mission of Advancing Health Together. The Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is an expert in the management of the breast-feeding mother-baby dyad. The Lactation Consultant works collaboratively with the Birthing Center, Neonatal Intensive Care nursery, Pediatrics, OB, Family Practice, and nursing care teams to develop feeding plans for a range of infants from the normal newborn to the complex neonate.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing, health, nutrition, or related field required.
  • 2 years of experience required.
  • IBCLC Certification by IBLCE (International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners) is required.
  • Excellent teaching, verbal, and written communication skills essential.
  • Experience in teaching 1-to-1 or in small groups.
  • Understanding of diverse cultural, physical, emotional, and psychological response to birthing, lactation, and parenting.

Responsibilities

  • Provide lactation support and services to breastfeeding mother/infant dyads.
  • Collaborate with assigned team to develop feeding plans.
  • Use current evidence to develop feeding plans that address individual feeding issues while respecting the family's breastfeeding goals.
  • Assess adequacy of breastfeeding and provides interventions and patient education as necessary for correction and/or prevention of feeding problems.
  • Assists mothers of infants who cannot breastfeed to establish and maintain a milk supply and store their milk appropriately.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team and outpatient IBCLC to provide continuity of care upon discharge or transfer of patients.
  • Provide breastfeeding education and materials to patients as needed.
  • Teach, coach, support and mentor nursing staff and other healthcare learners to promote evidence-based clinical practice and support breastfeeding skills.
  • Must maintain certification as lactation consultant (IBCLC).
