About The Position

The Lactation Consultant is responsible for providing safe, family centered patient care by assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating lactation plans for the mother-infant breastfeeding dyad, as well as for the pumping mother, and is fully collaborative with the mother, patient, patient's family, significant others, and members of the health care team. The Lactation Consultant demonstrates specialized knowledge and clinical expertise in breastfeeding and human lactation. As an integral member of the Health Care Team, the Lactation Consultant functions within the Scope of Practice as defined by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) and follows Standards of Practice as defined by their professional association, International Lactation Consultant Association, and adheres to Seattle Children's policies, procedures, and guidelines of care.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing school.
  • Minimum of two years of clinical experience in a health care setting.
  • Current Washington State nursing license.
  • Certification as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) obtained within 12 months.
  • Current BLS for Health Care Providers at all times.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nutrition or Clinical Dietetics, OR a Bachelor’s Degree in occupational therapy, physical therapy, or speech-language pathology from an accredited university.
  • Minimum two (2) years of clinical experience in a health care setting.
  • Current Washington State license to practice as an occupational therapist OR current Washington State license to practice as a physical therapist, OR current Washington State license to practice as a speech-language pathologist, OR registration through the Commission on Dietetic Registration (RD) with certification with the State of Washington within four (4) months of hire (DI).
  • Certification as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) obtained within 12 months.
  • Current BLS for Health Care Providers at all times.

Nice To Haves

  • BSN or higher nursing degree.
  • Experience as an IBCLC.
  • Pediatric health care experience.
  • Experience in a Maternal-Child Health setting.
  • Understanding of adult learning principles.
  • Master's Degree in Nutrition, Clinical Dietetics, or Public Health with a nutrition emphasis, OR a master’s degree in occupational therapy, physical therapy, or speech-language pathology from an accredited university.
