Accountable for the delivery of quality care to patients and families according to the individualized needs of the patient. This role involves providing appropriate care specific to the age of the customer/patient, performing assessments, developing and revising plans of care, and implementing interventions consistent with lactation protocols and standards of care. The consultant will also perform technical skills competently, maintain professional behavior, and initiate actions to correct or minimize risks to patients. Additionally, the role includes providing education and support for breastfeeding mothers and babies, assessing inpatients with lactation risk factors, developing breastfeeding plans for discharge, and providing ongoing breastfeeding education during the pregnancy continuum. The consultant will also prepare formal inservices for staff and/or community, teach educational sessions for corporate lactation clients, and perform telephone assessments of discharged mothers and babies.
