About The Position

IU Health is Indiana’s largest and most comprehensive healthcare system, and the #1 ranked healthcare provider in the state. We are seeking a dedicated Lactation Consultant II to provide comprehensive infant feeding services, support families through inpatient and outpatient care, and promote breastfeeding and maternal health. The Lactation Consultant II offers expert infant feeding services to families across inpatient and outpatient settings. This role involves developing, marketing, and implementing lactation support plans, increasing awareness of the lactation program, and creating educational materials for diverse audiences. Using clinical expertise in assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation, the Lactation Consultant II collaborates with a multidisciplinary team to enhance patient outcomes, advance the patient plan of care, and improve operational efficiency. The role requires adherence to the ANA Scope and Standards of Professional Nursing and the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements.

Requirements

  • Requires an Associates of Nursing (ASN).
  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Indiana or an active Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) RN license.
  • Graduation from a nationally accredited nursing program.
  • Certification by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) (IBCLC certification required within one year of hire).
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the AHA.
  • Background working with childbearing families or maternal health nursing.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelors of Nursing (BSN) preferred.
  • Other advanced life support certifications may be required per unit/department policies.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive breastfeeding and infant feeding support to inpatient and outpatient families.
  • Develop, market, and implement individualized lactation support plans.
  • Educate patients and families about breastfeeding techniques, benefits, and challenges.
  • Increase awareness of the lactation program through educational initiatives and outreach.
  • Develop educational materials tailored to various audiences.
  • Collaborate with healthcare teams to promote best practices in maternal and infant care.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of services provided.
  • Use clinical expertise in assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient and family needs.
  • Participate in decision-making, teaching, mentoring, and collaboration with the multidisciplinary team to advance patient care.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development to stay current with lactation practices and certifications.
