About The Position

This position is responsible for the physical expansion and development of the current community vegetable garden at Sutton Youth Shelter. The incumbent will organize equipment, provide input into material purchasing, and coordinate volunteer garden workers. They will promote positive and supportive attitudes toward youth experiencing homelessness, work alongside community members and residential clients in all facets of gardening, and help facilitate good relationships between youth, Diversion Rec. clients, and community members/project staff. The role also involves nurturing and supporting a positive, recreational working environment for garden participants.

Requirements

  • Must be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment.
  • Must be a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
  • Must have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment.
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations.
  • Knowledge and understanding of, and a commitment to anti-racism and anti-oppression.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent budgeting, organizational, time management, written and oral communication skills.
  • Computer proficiency with Microsoft Office, including strong skills in Excel.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of planting and maintaining gardens, greenhouses, and ability to share that knowledge and provide instruction to clients.
  • Ability to work cooperatively as a team member and individually.
  • Must be caring and non-judgemental of clients-regardless of their level of ability or commitment.
  • Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility.
  • Provide a vulnerable sector check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army at its sole discretion.
  • Participate in all training provided by the Ministry Unit.

Responsibilities

  • Adhering to standards consistent with the values & philosophy of The Salvation Army and the Residential Services Department.
  • Participating fully and constructively in staff meetings and in-service training.
  • Engaging in weekly supervision sessions with supervisor throughout the summer work season.
  • Ensuring a working knowledge of, and following the Policy & Procedures Manual and the Employees Handbook.
  • Becoming familiar with the provision of the position description & operations manual.
  • Making suggestions that will improve efficiency, working conditions or procedures to management.
  • Representing the Organization in a professional manner.
  • Program planning which encourages youth engagement in productive and healthy activities.
  • Recruiting volunteers and community agencies to partner in program service delivery.
  • Planning Agricultural field trips for youth program participants and community volunteers.
  • Inspiring young people to be productive and healthy with their time, resources, body and mind.
  • Ensuring that Health and Safety standards are met or surpassed in all operations.
  • Attending regular supervision meetings.
  • Establishing and maintaining rapport with program youth.
  • Performing program statistics as assigned.
  • Developing and maintaining contact with vendors/merchants in managing supplies for the garden.
  • Acting as an advocate and being a positive role model for residential client participants as well as youth in the community.
  • Developing effective working relationships and partnerships with community members, representatives of other departments, agencies and co-workers.
  • Maintaining documentation and filing and other administration duties as required.
  • Representing the Salvation Army and this project at community meetings.
  • Performing any other related duties as requested by supervisor.
  • Providing a clear vulnerable sector screen.
  • Participating in all training provided by the Ministry Unit.
  • Maintaining a list of reports required for health and safety compliance purposes.
  • Supporting external reporting requests as needed.
