About The Position

The Laborer assists the Foreman and skilled craft workers with assigned duties under close supervision. This is usually an entry-level role and a first step toward learning a skill. The work involves construction labor for waterworks projects, including handling materials and tools, preparing and placing materials, joining pipe, and assisting with routine tasks and machine work. The position is performed outdoors in changing weather conditions and involves heavy physical activity.

Requirements

• Less than a high school diploma.
• Manual dexterity sufficient to reach and handle items, work with fingers, and perceive attributes of objects and materials.
• Ability to perform strenuous, heavy physical activity.

Responsibilities

• Dig, spread, and level dirt, sand, and gravel using a pick, shovel, or rake.
• Lift, carry, and hold construction materials, tools, and supplies.
• Clean tools, equipment, materials, and the work area.
• Mix, pour, and spread concrete, asphalt, gravel, and other materials using hand tools.
• Join, wrap, and seal sections of pipe.
• Perform routine non-machine tasks, including removing forms, filling excavations, placing pipe sections in trenches, and assembling pipe sections.
• Perform machine-related tasks such as tamping soil and jackhammering, and assist with pipe fusing.
• Comply with safety policies, practices, and procedures, and report unsafe activities to a supervisor and/or Human Resources.
• Participate in team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals.
• Provide leadership to others by example and by sharing knowledge and skills.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
