About The Position

The City of Hanford is seeking to fill three (3) Part-Time Laborer positions in the Public Works Department - Streets Division. This position is responsible for performing various manual labor and maintenance duties. The working hours will vary depending on the working assignment. The position may be assigned to work split shifts, evenings, early mornings, weekends, and holidays, as needed. Please note these are part-time, temporary positions not to exceed 1,000 hours per fiscal year and afford no benefits.

Requirements

• General use of hand tools and safe working practices
• Use hand tools in unskilled construction and repair
• Observe safety in the work environment
• Understand simple oral and written directions
• Maintain effective working relationships with co-workers
• Perform heavy manual labor
• Carry out written and oral instructions without close supervision
• Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with persons contacted in the course of work
• Any combination of training and experience, which demonstrates an ability to perform the duties of the positions
• General work experience, preferably including some parks or utilities experience
• Completion of formal or informal education sufficient to assure the ability to read and write at the level required for successful job performance
• Possession of, or ability to obtain, a current valid California driver's license
• A current DMV driving printout (less than one-month-old) must be submitted with a completed City application

Responsibilities

• Gathering materials and equipment
• Placing materials and/or equipment in proper locations
• Cleaning equipment

• Maintaining facilities and/or equipment
• Basin maintenance operations and troubleshooting
• Maintaining and repairing equipment
• Ensuring proper inventory of supplies
• Performing minor repairs of equipment and facilities
• Notifying appropriate individuals of required facility and/or equipment repairs
• Maintaining a variety of records and/or logs of daily activities
• Assisting customers with a variety of inquiries and requests
• Assisting full-time employees with duties including gate valve operation, wastewater collections and basin maintenance
• Painting curbs, crosswalks and street lines
• Assisting with reconstruction, paving and resurfacing streets, alleys and parking lots and street light retrofit, and crack sealing
• Performing a variety of maintenance operations
• Operating light trucks
• Observing safety rules
• Performing routine manual labor
• Assisting the division with the maintenance of parks, medians and rights-of-way
• Performing a wide variety of maintenance operations involving parks, and related areas
• Operating tractors, light trucks and gang mowers
• Working at heights, below street level, in trenches and in confined spaces
• Spraying drainage ditches for weeds and insect control
• Watering, cultivating, fertilizing, and caring for shrubbery, lawns and trees
• Mowing and edging lawns with hand and powered equipment
• Spraying for pests, weeds and rodent control
• Cleaning and raking grounds
• Preparing soil for planting and transplanting
• Installing and maintaining irrigation systems, turf, playground equipment, bleachers, picnic tables and shade structures
• Removing leaves from parks and streets
• Trimming trees
• Filling trenches and ditches
• Making minor repairs and adjustments to maintenance equipment and tools
