About The Position

Works under direct supervision to perform physical labor of an unskilled nature, generally in an outside location at the Roads & Bridges Department. This position is subject to a background check for any convictions that have a substantial relationship to potential job duties. Only convictions that are substantially related to potential job duties will be considered and will not automatically disqualify the candidate. All employees hired after September 1, 1986, must be residents of Shelby County and shall continue to reside in the County as a condition of their employment. The residency requirement shall not apply to certain public safety/civil service employees.

Requirements

• Two (2) years of work experience, preferably in an outdoor environment.
• Tenth (10) grade education.
• Ability to work as directed and follow oral instructions.
• Physical ability to perform assigned work tasks.
• Ability to learn simple techniques from reasonable instructions.
• Ability to cooperate with other personnel.
• Ability to work in an outdoor environment.
• Must pass a physical examination.
• Must be able to lift and carry up to 90 lbs.
• Must submit to and pass drug and alcohol screening.
• Must work in inclement weather, i.e. snow, flooding, ice, and high winds.
• Must possess a valid Tennessee driver’s license or secure one by date of employment.

Responsibilities

• Perform unskilled labor of a manual nature.
• Assists in construction and maintenance.
• Pours/sets concrete; shovels and spreads asphalt, limestone, and rock occasionally.
• Patches roads using asphalt.
• Operates spreader box on trucks.
• Operates non-complex equipment; assists with pile-driving operations.
• Bring supplies and equipment to labor sites.
• Assists with pile driving operating, setting concrete and metal pipes, and laying pipes.
• Assists with ditches and operating a tractor/mower on right-of-way cutting.
• Acts as an essential worker to respond to emergencies.
• Performs other related duties as required or directed.
