About The Position

Bureau Veritas is seeking a Laboratory Technician for their environmental testing laboratory in Sydney, Nova Scotia. This is a seasonal contract position through December 2026, reporting to the Laboratory Manager. The role is ideal for a recent science graduate or early-career professional looking to gain experience in an environmental laboratory. While there are some laboratory support duties, the main focus is on supporting the Sample Reception team during the busiest season. The technician will be responsible for receiving, processing, organizing, and preparing environmental samples accurately, ensuring excellent customer service, and supporting laboratory operations. This is a fully onsite position located at 465 George Street, Sydney, NS, with standard business hours, Monday through Friday.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary education in Science, Environmental Studies, Biology, Microbiology, or a related discipline.
  • Customer-focused communication skills, comfortable interacting with clients in person and over the phone.
  • Professional communication, positive attitude under pressure, strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Attention to detail, understanding the importance of accuracy, following procedures, maintaining records.
  • Physical capability to stand for most of the workday, move throughout the facility, and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Adaptability and initiative to thrive in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.
  • Proactive, dependable, able to manage multiple priorities, and willing to step in wherever support is needed.
  • Technical aptitude to learn new systems and use technology, including Microsoft Outlook, Teams, Excel, shipping software, and proprietary systems.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in customer service, administrative, laboratory, or related experience is considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Receive, unpack, organize, and process environmental samples.
  • Ensure accurate documentation and timely entry into laboratory systems.
  • Greet clients, answer basic inquiries, and support bottle pickup requests.
  • Prepare sample shipments, organize incoming and outgoing coolers, label bottles, and assemble sample kits.
  • Support the efficient movement of samples throughout the testing process.
  • Maintain accurate records and follow established procedures.
  • Help ensure sample integrity and compliance with quality and safety requirements.
  • Assist with laboratory preparation activities and gain exposure to additional testing and laboratory procedures as workload permits.
