About The Position

Oil and Petroleum Laboratory Technicians perform laboratory tests to determine chemical and physical characteristics or composition of solid, liquid, or gaseous materials for such purposes as quality control, process control, or product development. This role involves operating laboratory equipment, testing various oil and gas related samples, preparing chemical solutions, and ensuring adherence to company safety and quality procedures. The position may require working rotating schedules, including weekends and holidays, and being available on-call, with potential for overtime.

Requirements

High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
One to three years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees.
Ability to execute basic algebra as it applies to the role.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Valid driver’s license required.
Regularly required to stand; use hands to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; talk or hear; and taste and smell.
Frequently required to walk.
Occasionally required to sit; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
May be required to drive.
Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Nice To Haves

Bachelor’s Degree preferred for some technician and other laboratory roles.

Responsibilities

Follow all company safety procedures and guidelines.
Operate laboratory equipment and instruments such as viscometer, densitometer, spectrophotometer, gas chromatograph, colorimeter, and other equipment.
Test samples related to oil and gas per industry or company methods (e.g., gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, fuel oil, petrochemicals).
Utilize instruments such as gas chromatograph, titrators, densitometers, ICP, AA, and other instruments for testing.
Follow all company quality procedures.
Analyze SQC samples and compare the results to known limits.
Prepare chemical solutions.
Recognize and investigate suspect test results.
Participate as a team player, understanding the success of the team is critical.
Perform instrument calibration as required.
Perform instrument maintenance and troubleshooting as required.
May work a rotating schedule including weekends and holidays and must be available to work on an on-call basis.
Some overtime may be required.
Perform other duties assigned by management.
