About The Position

The Laboratory Technician supports the teaching and research laboratory operations in the Department of Chemistry. Key responsibilities for teaching laboratories include procuring and stocking supplies; preparing reagents and solutions; distributing glassware, chemicals, and equipment for laboratory classes; maintaining and repairing or replacing small equipment; recruiting, training, scheduling, and supervising student workers; and overseeing the safety of students and teaching assistants. More broadly, the Laboratory Technician supports research and overall operation of the department by assisting faculty with procurement and delivering supplies; maintaining inventories of equipment and chemicals; maintaining compressed gas supplies; distributing personal protective equipment; assisting in cryogen refills of the NMR spectrometer; interfacing with Facilities Management on maintenance work orders; and providing technical or administrative assistance as needed for the Chemistry Manager, the Executive Aide, and the Chair.

Requirements

  • Associate’s Degree in Chemistry or related field with General and Organic Chemistry coursework (equivalent to ETSU’s CHEM 1110/1111, 1120/1121, 2010/2011 and 2020/2021).
  • Two years’ employment as a Laboratory Assistant or equivalent position in a research or instructional laboratory.
  • Ability to prepare chemical reagents and solutions safely and accurately.
  • Knowledge of Chemistry safety rules.
  • Ability to apply Chemical Hygiene and Safety in real-time.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to organize and supervise activities of student workers.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to apply critical thinking skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry or related discipline with Quantitative Analysis coursework equivalent to ETSU’s CHEM 2220/2221 in addition to General and Organic Chemistry coursework.
  • Experience as Laboratory Assistant or equivalent position in a research or instructional laboratory.
