About The Position

This position is responsible for all phases of pathology specimen handling and slide preparation, including quality control and assurance, instrument maintenance and technical problem resolution. Responsibilities include providing optimal specimen processing with positive outcomes while observing cost containment, privacy and safety issues.

Requirements

  • Associates degree in the sciences
  • Previous histology experience including grossing of specimens
  • Documented training consistent with CLIA 88 requirements
  • HT or HTL license or eligible
  • Proficient with computer, phone, fax, printer, copier and calculator
  • Cooperative work attitude toward employees, management, visitors and physicians
  • Work independently and be self-motivated
  • Skillfully organized
  • Communicate clearly and proficiently, verbally and written
  • Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods
  • Visual and auditory acuity for frequent use of computer and telephone and occasional use of other office equipment
  • Ability to work in close proximity with odorous chemicals which may be a biohazard
  • May be subject to electrical and radiant energy hazards
  • Ability to intermittently lift and carry up to 50 lbs., up to five times per shift
  • Requires normal vision
  • Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity
  • Requires the ability to distinguish letters or symbols
  • Requires the ability to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment

Responsibilities

  • Observes Universal Precautions
  • Maintains working knowledge of hazardous materials. Familiar with location and use of SDS and is proactive in preventing personal, patient and staff exposure to hazardous materials
  • Participates in safety and quality assessment and performance improvement programs if applicable and notifies supervisor of safety issues promptly. Takes appropriate actions regarding safety issues
  • Responsible for seeking educational opportunities related to position and maintain current knowledge of laboratory and histology procedures
  • Participates in orientation and mentoring of other staff members if needed
  • Provides pathologists with appropriately prepared specimens in accordance with their requests
  • Cleans, disinfects, maintains and troubleshoots all lab equipment and instruments
  • Ensures specimen blocks and / or slides are appropriately filed
  • Inventory and ordering of supplies while considering cost containment
  • Works in close communication with endoscopy nurse manager to resolve issues regarding specimen collection
  • Maintains work area in neat and orderly manner
  • Complete assigned workload within prescribed time limit and works efficiently under pressure and without continual supervision
  • Maintains ability to analyze, evaluate and solve specimen processing related problems
  • Responsible for ensuring patient data is appropriately logged and billing processes are followed
  • Other duties may be assigned by Administrator or health care providers to promote efficiency and enhance customer service
  • Abides by OSHA and HIPAA regulations.
