About The Position

This is a technical position in the Utah Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (UVDL) with primary duties in the histology section and secondary duties in molecular diagnostics. The role involves embedding, sectioning, and staining tissues of animal origin, performing special stains, and maintaining chemical solutions. Additionally, the position requires training for and performance of serum neutralization assays, including cell culture. As a backup in the molecular section, the technician will perform PCR-based assays. Participation in the laboratory's quality system, including proficiency testing, is also a key responsibility.

Requirements

  • Minimum Qualifications: Two years of related experience (e.g. experience in molecular biology, etc.); OR an associate degree/vocational training; OR an equivalent combination of education plus experience in a biological science.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Capacity to learn/master new techniques.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor of science in biology-related field OR work experience in a histology, virology, or molecular laboratory.

Responsibilities

  • Embed, section, and stain tissues of animal origin.
  • Perform special (non-routine) stains on tissue sections.
  • Clean and replace chemical solutions used in processing tissues.
  • Train and subsequently perform serum neutralization assays, which includes cell culture.
  • Serve as a backup in the UVDL molecular section by performing PCR-based assays on samples of animal origin.
  • Participate in the laboratory's quality system, including completion of necessary proficiency tests.
