About The Position

Under general direction of licensed personnel, the Laboratory Technician I works cooperatively with all team members to perform tasks related to pre-analytical functions of laboratory testing and other tasks required to maintain the lab section. This role involves accessioning specimens, preparing them for testing, maintaining reagents, and ensuring a safe and efficient work environment. The technician will also handle phone calls and participate in performance improvement activities.

Requirements

Responsibilities

  • Accessions all specimens received and verifies that all specimens are properly identified and labeled according to departmental procedure and timeframes.
  • Labels, separates and otherwise prepares specimens.
  • Distributes specimens to appropriate work area in a timely manner.
  • Practices sterile and aseptic technique and prevents cross contamination.
  • Processes specimens for the preanalytical phase of testing for Molecular Microbiology.
  • Grinds tissues and processes for plating.
  • Labels incoming reagents with received/expiration date and stores appropriately.
  • Disposes of samples according to department specimen retention policy.
  • Records temperatures according to procedure as directed.
  • Prioritizes and coordinates work to achieve maximum productivity and efficiency.
  • Answers telephone calls in a timely manner; routes calls, ascertains needs, and takes accurate messages as is appropriate.
  • Demonstrates an active problem solving attitude & positive approach to all aspects of job.
  • Uses the appropriate hand off communication techniques (SBAR) when appropriate.
  • Maintains safe work area by observing all safety procedures and reporting any unsafe conditions or practices to the appropriate personnel.
  • Participates in hospital performance improvement activities (kaizens, lean initiatives) when appropriate.
