About The Position

Inova Mount Vernon Hospital is seeking a dedicated Laboratory Technician Assistant 2 to support laboratory operations. This part-time role involves receiving, evaluating, prioritizing, accessioning, labeling, and distributing specimens to support accurate and efficient laboratory testing. The assistant also helps maintain department supplies and cleanliness, reviews pending-test reports and resolves issues, follows facility procedures during downtime, and may train new team members as a preceptor.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• One year of laboratory experience in a clinical laboratory environment or experience as a phlebotomist.

Responsibilities

• Educate and train new team members while acting as a preceptor.
• Maintain a clean, orderly, and well-stocked department and notify appropriate personnel of shortages.
• Review system pending reports for reference laboratory tests and resolve problems accordingly.
• Communicate effectively while performing downtime processes according to facility standard operating procedures.
• Prioritize STAT and routine specimens as they arrive in the laboratory or appear on pending lists, following facility SOPs, and manage workload efficiently.
• Evaluate specimens for acceptability for testing, including clots and hemolysis, and distribute them while noting special requirements and prioritizing delivery to the department or other laboratories.
• Accurately and efficiently accession specimens and label smears, media plates, centrifuge tubes, and other items.
• Prepare and receive 24-hour urine containers, verifying collection technique, total volume, and the correct preservative according to facility policy.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.
