About The Position

The Laboratory Supervisor also serves as the laboratory Director, overseeing patient testing at a remote clinic. This role requires 24-hour coverage, in addition to any call-back time, and involves performing laboratory tests to produce reliable and precise data. Responsibilities include carrying out routine tasks accurately, preparing specimens, maintaining laboratory equipment, ensuring adequate stock, recording and interpreting results, and adhering to strict safety procedures. The hospital is located in a small town in rural Montana and includes a rural health clinic, ER, Xray, PT, and a 25-bed CAH and Swingbed. The nearest higher level of care facility is 80 miles away, with helicopter and ambulance services for transports. The area offers recreational activities such as sapphire mining, trout fishing, skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing, ice hockey, and an award-winning microbrewery.

Requirements

• Must meet the requirements for a clinical laboratory scientist as noted in the current rules pertaining to clinical laboratory science practitioners in the State of Montana.
• Must meet requirements under CLIA regulations.
• Must meet regulations that concern continuing education.
• Must possess a current MT CLS license.

Responsibilities

• Oversees patient testing done at a remote clinic.
• Provides 24-hour coverage in addition to any call time coverage, and is available according to the call back policy.
• Performs laboratory tests in order to produce reliable and precise data to support scientific investigations.
• Carries out routine tasks accurately and follows strict methodologies to carry out analyses.
• Prepares specimens and samples.
• Constructs, maintains, and operates standard laboratory equipment.
• Ensures the laboratory is well-stocked and resourced.
• Records and sometimes interprets results to present to senior colleagues.
• Keeps up to date with technical developments, especially those which can save time and improve reliability.
• Follows and ensures strict safety procedures and safety checks.
• Performs specific tests on patient specimens, including calibration, actual testing procedures, preparation of reagents, internal and external quality control, and reporting of results.
• Forwards samples to appropriate labs when tests are ordered that are not done in this facility.
• Keeps accurate records on all patient test results and all quality control.
• Provides periodic preventive maintenance on all laboratory equipment, instruments, etc.
• Ensures the laboratory is neat, clean, and in efficient running order at all times and provides a safe working environment.
• Acquires 14 hours of continuing education per year.
• Provides the best possible functioning of the laboratory and turns out reliable and cost-effective work.
