About The Position

The Laboratory Supervisor, Anatomy is responsible for designing, implementing, coordinating, testing and maintaining laboratory components of undergraduate laboratory experiences, with a primary focus in anatomy. The incumbent provides safe, quality laboratory demonstrations for students in the courses, and supervises students and teaching assistants (TAs) in the execution. The Laboratory Supervisor, Anatomy manages the Anatomy Volunteer Program. The Laboratory Supervisor, Anatomy coordinates departmental teaching purchases.

Requirements

  • A completed M.Sc. (or equivalent) in Health Sciences, Kinesiology, Human Anatomy, or Clinical Anatomy;
  • Current CPR and First Aid certifications;
  • Laboratory experience, including practical experience with human anatomy (models and prosected specimens), in a teaching capacity at the University level;
  • Proven technical skills in human anatomy, including preparing full body dissections and prosections, and other teaching materials for human anatomy education and research;
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively explain, observe, correct, and guide students in a laboratory environment;
  • Applied experience at the University level using an extensive variety of teaching techniques and technologies;
  • Proficiency in standard computer programs and software, including Microsoft Office, Gradebook, and Brightspace (or equivalent);
  • Working knowledge of and training in chemical safety, transportation of dangerous goods, Canadian Biosafety Standards, experimental procedures, and various sterilization instrument;
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills including discretion, and confidentiality;
  • Strong multi-tasking, prioritization, and organizational skills, with the ability to adhere to strict deadlines and keep accurate records;
  • Ability to work in an environment that includes handling and unavoidable exposure to hazardous elements such as chemicals, biohazards, odors and equipment;
  • Ability to spend a significant amount of time with human cadaveric specimens in laboratories.

  • Experience working with autoclave.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop and prepare lab demonstrations that are current and relevant to the course curricula (i.e., designing, testing, researching, revising lab manuals, etc.);
  • Develop learning objectives, lab manuals and associated documents for laboratory demonstrations, commensurate with current technology and knowledge base;
  • Prepare the set up and take down of lab specimens and models, preparing labs that are current and relevant to the course content, including incorporating feedback, researching, and revising as necessary;
  • Perform demonstrations and direct students through laboratory activities, including explaining, observing, correcting, and guiding as needed, ensuring quality and consistency in laboratory delivery;
  • Facilitate the recruitment and selection of Teaching Assistants (TAs), and schedule and direct the work of TAs;
  • Assist instructor in creating allocation of hours forms for each TA as per CUPE regulations;
  • Liaise with Departmental Chair, instructor and administrative staff to coordinate the TA Contracts and placement of the TAs into anatomy labs and proctors for anatomy bell-ringer exams;
  • Manage laboratory resources, including conducting inventory of materials required for demonstrations;
  • Inspect laboratory equipment for operational problems and advise appropriate service areas of malfunctioning equipment;
  • Source and liaise with sales reps for new equipment and quotes;
  • Maintain and record student grades related to laboratory activities and assessments in the current electronic format (Brightspace);
  • Advise and resolve students on issues and concerns including missed labs, timetable conflicts associated with labs, and marking concerns;
  • Seek funding opportunities and support writing of funding applications directed at anatomy pedagogical research.
