About The Position

The Laboratory Processor is responsible for overseeing the organization and workflow of the laboratory processing area, ensuring accurate specimen handling and compliance with laboratory standards. This role manages supply inventory, coordinates specimen receipt and preparation, performs waived testing, and provides training on laboratory information systems related to phlebotomy and patient orders. The Laboratory Processor supports staff coverage during absences and ensures proper documentation, specimen storage, and shipment coordination. This position is essential to maintaining efficient laboratory operations and quality control.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
  • 1 year of relevant laboratory experience or formal training in a clinical or medical laboratory setting.
  • Equivalent combination of education, training, and hands-on experience in specimen processing, phlebotomy support, or related laboratory functions will be considered.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to accurately verify and process laboratory specimens in compliance with established protocols.
  • Basic knowledge of laboratory safety standards, specimen handling, and hazardous waste management.
  • Effective communication skills to coordinate with healthcare providers, laboratory staff, and supervisors.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently, including inventory control and workflow organization.
  • Willingness to provide coverage during staff absences, weekends, and peak workload periods.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS) such as Athena or similar platforms is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Organize and optimize the laboratory processing area and workflow to ensure operational efficiency.
  • Manage add-on orders, resolve misplaced samples, and handle follow-up communications to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Provide training and support on Athena/LIS systems related to phlebotomy and patient order management.
  • Guide phlebotomists and laboratory processors in executing accurate specimen collection and processing procedures.
  • Oversee the procurement and inventory management of phlebotomy, processing, office, and general laboratory supplies.
  • Provide coverage for phlebotomy and processing staff during absences, weekends, extended shifts, and peak workloads.
  • Receive, verify, and assess laboratory samples for accuracy and compliance with established SOPs.
  • Reject non-compliant specimens, document discrepancies, and coordinate healthcare providers to obtain replacements.
  • Ensure specimen labels accurately correspond with associated documentation and verify samples are free from contamination before testing.
  • Prepare and process specimens for testing, including centrifugation, serum separation, blood smears, and waived analyses (e.g., blood, urine, stool).
  • Complete requisitions and prepare specimens for shipment to reference laboratories, ensuring proper labeling and packaging.
  • Track specimens throughout the testing process to maintain accurate sample information and documentation.
  • Manage data entry related to patient specimen information in the laboratory information system, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
  • Maintain thorough documentation of all pre-analytical and post-analytical procedures in accordance with laboratory guidelines.
  • Ensure proper storage and handling of specimens and manage hazardous waste disposal following regulatory protocols.
  • Communicate with supervisors regarding any in-house samples requiring external testing, ensuring no samples are sent without appropriate approval.
  • Efficiently manage container logistics and promptly document and report any issues encountered during specimen processing.
  • Demonstrate excellent guest service to internal team members and patients.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
