About The Position

JOB SUMMARY: Performs and interprets routine diagnostic procedures with minimal supervision in those areas in which the technologist is qualified by education and experience. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Performs and interprets routine diagnostic procedures in chemistry, hematology, coagulation, and urinalysis. Microbiology responsibility may include reading and interpretation of cultures in addition to plating and further testing work-up of specimens; assigns state test priorities; responsible for proper start-up and calibration of instrumentation; monitors daily quality control and records data; reports any deviations to supervisor; performs routine preventative maintenance and records action taken; assists in bone marrow procedures; assists in blood collection, processing of specimens, and reception duties; is available to assist the technician when further interpretation of test results is required; and displays an interest in scientific and technical activities required to perform a variety of tests; does related work as required. May be exposed to hazardous drugs. Attends OSHA training upon initial employee orientation and annually completes an OSHA competency. RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHERS: Direct relationship with patients, staff, physicians, and administration. Must maintain a courteous and effective working relationship with patients, staff, physicians and administration.

Requirements

  • B.S. degree in Medical Technology or B.S. in one of the biological chemical or physical sciences and has at least one year full-time laboratory experience and/or training; or meets the New York State qualifications of a medical technologist under Chapter II – Administrative Rules and Regulations, sub-part 58-1; clinical Laboratories, Statutory Authority, Public Health Law.

  • Demonstrates skill in all routine laboratory techniques
  • Exercises independent judgement, initiative and responsibility with minimal supervision.
  • Recognizes limits of authority
  • Demonstrates flexibility by modifying work patterns to facilitate daily workload
  • Knowledge and awareness of laboratory safety procedures
  • Holds a current NYS License.
  • Requires sitting, standing, bending and reaching.
  • May require lifting up to 20 pounds.
  • Requires manual dexterity sufficient to operate standard office equipment such as computer, fax, calculators and telephone.
  • Requires normal hearing and vision.
