About The Position

Responsible for executing assigned phlebotomy (procurement of blood specimens) and specimen processing laboratory functions. This role requires proficiency in the Laboratory Information System for tasks such as order entry, specimen login, and label printing. The technician must follow positive patient identification procedures before sample collection and ensure accurate labeling. Key technical skills include venipuncture, capillary collection (finger/heel stick), arterial stick, and blood culture collection with appropriate decontamination procedures. The role also involves receiving, logging, and verifying specimen types, distributing them to testing areas, and validating samples collected by nursing personnel. The technician will assemble and transport samples according to test specifications (e.g., ammonia on ice, cold agglutinins kept warm) and alert technologists. Additionally, the role includes assisting with supply management, inventory control, answering phone inquiries regarding specimen status and results in compliance with HIPAA, and maintaining knowledge of laboratory operations and test requirements. The technician must actively participate in improving patient safety, reducing patient risk, and complying with Safety and Infection Control policies. A working knowledge of applicable laws and regulations, as well as ethical and professional conduct, is required. Maintaining strict confidentiality within CTCHEC is essential. General computer skills and familiarity with department-specific software are necessary. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
Proficient in the appropriate designated use of Laboratory Information System, to include but not be limited to, department order entry, specimen log in, reprint labels, printing collection lists, printing pending collections, and other basic computer functions.
Technically proficient in procurement of blood samples via venipuncture technique.
Technically proficient in procurement of blood samples via capillary collection (finger/heel stick) technique.
Technically proficient in procurement of blood samples via arterial stick technique.
Technically proficient in procurement of blood cultures using appropriate drawing decontamination procedures and techniques.
Knowledge of and actively participates in improving patient safety and reducing risk to patients.
Complies with Safety and Infection Control policies.
Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical, and professional behavior.
Maintains strict confidentiality with all matters within CTCHEC.
Demonstrates general working knowledge of computers and department specific software (i.e. Healthstreams, internet, etc.).

Nice To Haves

Formal phlebotomy training in an academic setting or medical assistant training preferred.
Phlebotomy experience in a clinical setting preferred.

Responsibilities

Execute assigned phlebotomy (procurement of blood specimens) and specimen processing laboratory functions.
Utilize the Laboratory Information System for order entry, specimen login, label printing, and other basic computer functions.
Follow established positive patient identification procedures prior to sample collection.
Label samples in compliance with Ambulatory Clinic and laboratory policy and procedure.
Perform blood sample procurement via venipuncture technique.
Perform blood sample procurement via capillary collection (finger/heel stick) technique.
Perform blood sample procurement via arterial stick technique.
Perform blood culture procurement using appropriate drawing decontamination procedures and techniques.
Receive, appropriately log, and verify receipt of all specimen types in the laboratory.
Distribute specimens appropriately to designated testing areas.
Validate that all samples collected by nursing personnel from patients with indwelling vascular access are collected in accordance with laboratory policy and procedure and labeled appropriately.
Assemble and transport samples to the laboratory in accordance with test specifications (i.e., ammonia on ice, cold agglutinins kept warm).
Alert technologists that samples are available for processing.
Assist in receiving and stocking supplies, rotating inventory, and inventory control.
Answer phone inquiries and relate specimen status and results in accordance with HIPAA standards.
Maintain current working knowledge of laboratory operation and test requirements.
Utilize resource sources as appropriate.
Maintain knowledge of and actively participate in improving patient safety and reducing risk to patients.
Comply with Safety and Infection Control policies.
Maintain a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations.
Ensure adherence to policies and procedures in a manner that reflects honest, ethical, and professional behavior.
