About The Position

The Laboratory Manager, under direction, coordinates the distribution, oversight, and maintenance of supplies and equipment in departmental teaching laboratories. Prepares specifications, oversees laboratory set-ups, and ensures efficient operations of demonstrations and/or equipment in teaching laboratories.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Six years of related experience

  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and SolidWorks.
  • Welding skills.
  • Ability to maintain the security and integrity of critical infrastructure, which may include communications systems, computer networks and systems, cybersecurity systems, electrical grid, hazardous waste treatment system or water treatment system.

Responsibilities

  • Selects, orders, installs, repairs, modifies, and maintains machines and a variety of shop equipment and tools, construction materials, component parts, electronic instruments, measuring devices, and other shop supplies used in the performance of work.
  • Coordinates laboratory personnel, facility and services with faculty, teaching assistants and researchers to ensure essential resources are available for research projects, experiments and/or tests.
  • Supervises and trains the workload of technical staff in the performance of assigned duties.
  • Operates forklift and overhead crane; sets up and programs data acquisition systems; collects and manages data; sets up, maintains and repairs hydraulic systems; fabricates fixtures in machine shop; instruments test specimens.
  • Modifies, adjusts, and repairs the lab equipment as necessary; troubleshoots and repairs mechanical components and electronic circuits in various instruments.
  • Locates and replaces defective components and makes necessary adjustments and calibrations.
  • Responsible for administrative and coordination aspects relating to the preparation of equipment in the High Bay Structural and Material Testing Laboratory.
  • Works from sketches, detailed drawings, or in conference with faculty and graduate students.
  • Designs and constructs basic and complex scientific instruments, apparatus, and equipment requiring exercise of skill and imagination, knowledge of physical and chemical properties of materials, and a comprehension of a scientific field.
  • Instructs and assists graduate students and staff in the proper use of tools and equipment and assists them with shop operations in their own construction and operation of research equipment.
  • Assesses the safety factors and monitors the performance of machinery and associated equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.
