About The Position

This position functions as a Laboratory Information Systems (LIS/LIMS) Analyst within the Laboratory Systems Section of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Bureau of Laboratories (BOL). The individual in this role is an essential member of the LIMS team, supporting multiple laboratory information systems used across the central and regional public health laboratories. Responsibilities include ongoing support, development, maintenance, and implementation of existing and replacement LIMS solutions.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Biology, Chemistry, or similar field.
  • Experience in laboratory testing, laboratory information management systems (LIMS), and/or health systems is strongly preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience or familiarity with Crystal Reports, SQL Server Management Studio, Oracle database tools and scripting languages or at least one other programming language is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Enhance existing LIMS configurations, workflows, and processes for multiple laboratory divisions.
  • Support daily LIMS operations to ensure specimen accessioning, sample tracking, inventory management, laboratory reporting, and electronic public health reporting run efficiently.
  • Provide general end-user IT support, including workstation setup, peripheral installation, and troubleshooting.
  • Create and maintain management reports, database queries, and statistical extracts based on program needs.
  • Support, test, and document routine software patches, releases, and major upgrades.
  • Collaborate with state IT partners on server management, database support, security changes, firewall configurations, instrument IP reservations, and cloud service integrations.
  • Assist with development and maintenance of automated workflows such as FTP file transfers, cloud services, HL7 ETOR, and archive data processes.
  • Interact with LIMS vendors, state technical staff, and laboratory stakeholders to maintain stable operations and resolve issues.
  • Participate in weekly project and operations meetings to provide progress updates.
  • Participate in requirements gathering sessions, workflow mapping, and functional gap analysis.
  • Configure test codes, worksheets, templates, QC rules, result entry forms, and reporting outputs.
  • Conduct functional, regression, interface, instrument, security, and UAT testing.
  • Troubleshoot issues discovered during implementation and coordinate resolution.
  • Assist with migration planning, including data mapping and validation of historical data imports.
  • Support instrument interface setup and validation.
  • Train laboratory staff on new system workflows and features.
  • Develop SOPs, test scripts, configuration records, and change control logs.
  • Support parallel operations and stabilization post go-live.
