About The Position

The Laboratory Assistant supports CLIA lab operations by receiving and preparing biological samples for processing, entering order data into the lab system, determining specimen acceptance or rejection based on established standards, and performing specimen investigation procedures when necessary. The role also involves performing routine instrument maintenance, organizing and storing requisitions, and managing sample collection kit inventory. The position requires demonstrating an understanding of compliance policies related to test ordering and maintaining records in accordance with Good Documentation Practices. The Laboratory Assistant will also assist with customer service and/or billing inquiries, handle and dispose of medical and chemical waste, and comply with environmental health and safety policies.

Requirements

  • Associate degree (AA) from a two-year college preferred, university; at least two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • MLT (Medical Laboratory Technician) preferred.
  • Experience with Good Laboratory Practices (GMP) and Good Documentation Practice (GDP).
  • Proficient computer skills, especially with Microsoft applications.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative and team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize workload effectively.
  • Ability to sit and/or stand and operate a computer with the ability to multitask across many software communication and data entry programs while operating and communicating through a telephone device for several hours a day.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to climb stairs in case the elevator is out.
  • Candidate must have the ability to maintain punctual daily attendance.
  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and prepare biological specimens for accurate processing.
  • Accession patient orders into the LIS.
  • Verify patient demographic information against test requisition forms.
  • Accept or reject specimens according to established standards.
  • Perform specimen investigation procedures to resolve issues.
  • Perform routine instrument maintenance as needed.
  • Prepare specimens for analysis, including aliquoting, transporting, and distributing.
  • Demonstrate understanding of compliance policies related to test ordering.
  • Complete all required written documentation legibly and within the assigned timeframe.
  • Maintain records in accordance with Good Documentation Practices and applicable archiving policies.
  • Assist with sample collection kit inventory management.
  • Meet or exceed performance expectations and demonstrate company values.
  • Assist with customer service and/or billing inquiries as needed.
  • Handle and dispose of medical and chemical waste.
  • Comply with applicable environmental health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
