About The Position

The Laboratory Assistant/Non-Phlebotomist provides clerical and technical support to Clinical Laboratory Scientists. The role supports laboratory operations by screening and processing specimens, responding to inquiries, handling laboratory information, and assisting with testing and equipment checks. It also includes communication with patients, coworkers, guests, and referral laboratories, as well as other clinical and clerical duties needed by the Department.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
One year of experience in laboratory testing assistance, preferably in an acute care facility.
Fire Life Safety Training (LA City); if the applicant does not have a card upon hire, it must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained through renewal before expiration. Required within LA City only.

Nice To Haves

Specialized or technical training; graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program.
Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT), California Department of Public Health.

Responsibilities

Receive and screen specimens for acceptability according to established guidelines.
Process, distribute, or package specimens received, except Blood Bank and Anatomic Pathology samples.
Respond to inquiries about laboratory results, specimen status, and the Department and its functions.
Communicate and interact effectively and professionally with patients, coworkers, and institutional guests, taking the patient's age into appropriate consideration.
Assist with and document laboratory testing, equipment maintenance, and function checks.
Follow established Hospital and Departmental policies and procedures.
Perform additional clinical and clerical duties to meet Department needs.
Maintain professional growth and development.
Participate actively in the Department's Quality Improvement program.
Perform other duties as assigned.
