About The Position
Undertakes laboratory, clerical and telephone duties with the laboratory area. Collects and processes specimens to help physicians diagnose diseases. Prepares specimens, carries out basic laboratory procedure. Mix chemical solutions and order/store supplies. Assist each Laboratory department with their needs including specimen processing, planting, processing and send outs. Uses centrifuges, measuring devices and laboratory glassware. Make minor repairs and simple adjustments to laboratory equipment. Clean equipment, lab areas and instruments as needed.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or Equivalent.
- Point of Care Technician license through the West Virginia DHHR within 30 days of hire.
- Medical Assistant or previous exposure/experience in a laboratory setting
- One (1) year of laboratory experience
- Able to multitask and handle stressful situations.
- Able to communicate effectively.
Nice To Haves
- Biology or Biochemistry degree.
Responsibilities
- Receive, identify and prepare all samples and request forms entering the department.
- Identify, prepare and dispatch all samples to correct lab departments maintaining an accurate log, uses pending logs and the specimen tracker system.
- Prepare, store and retrieve when necessary frozen aliquots, 24 hr urine aliquots, microbiology and routine blood samples.
- Alert the appropriate departments on receipt of urgent samples, frozen samples and samples requiring special handling.
- Use the laboratory computer systems, including confident use of the test/client libraries, hospital intranet and referral database during data entry.
- Scan, file and archive request forms and other hard copy data.
- Maintain a good operating knowledge of any analyzers or equipment required for performing tasks in the laboratory.
- Handle queries relating to samples and requests in a timely and professional manner.
- Receive and handle incoming calls to the department.
- Perform tasks in a careful and efficient way, in compliance with current CAP standards, regulatory requirements and the Quality Management System.
- Make minor repairs and simple adjustments to designated laboratory equipment.
- Clean laboratory equipment glassware and maintains a clean lab area.
