Department: Biology, Chemistry and Physics Laboratory Assistant – Technical Services HV-CS-9712 Description of Position: The Laboratory Assistant maintains and monitors laboratory supplies and services used by faculty and students. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining inventories of laboratory supplies and is required to maintain the cleanliness of labs, storage areas and equipment and may be required to calibrate the laboratory equipment used. A Laboratory Assistant may also assist in the preparation and demonstration of laboratory assignments. Depending on the laboratory to which assigned, the incumbent must be acquainted with laboratory operations and equipment of that particular field. The work is performed under the general supervision of technical supervisors or professional staff with some latitude permitted for the exercise of independent judgment in carrying out assignments. RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS: Candidates must have been legal residents of New York State for at least FOUR months immediately preceding the date of the test. Pursuant to subdivision 4a of Sec. 23 of the Civil Service Law, preference may be given to successful candidates who have been legal residents of the municipality to which the appointment is to be made for at least FOUR months preceding the date of the written test. Please Note: The successful candidate must take and pass the Rensselaer County Civil Service exam for Laboratory Assistant, when offered, and be reachable on the Laboratory Assistant list to qualify for permanent appointment.
