About The Position

Memorial laboratory professionals understand that every specimen and every report are informing diagnosis, treatment and care. We never lose sight of the patient and family who are on the other end of that data, and are depending on us for timely and accurate results. We aspire to the Five Rights of Laboratory Testing: performing the right test on the right patient at the right time for the right indicators leading to the right diagnostic decision. Prepares specimens for analysis by registering and accessioning orders via Hospital Information System and Laboratory Information Systems (clinical lab and/or anatomic pathology), verifying specimen acceptability. Performs established pre-analytical and analytical laboratory procedures, not requiring Medical Technologist or Histotechnologist interpretation, in accordance with established laboratory policy in an accurate, safe, and timely manner.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (Required)
  • Six (6) months of prior experience as a lab assistant.
  • Ability to effectively relate and communicate with internal and external customers
  • Basic knowledge of laboratory information systems
  • Requires critical thinking skills
  • Effective communication skills
  • Decisive judgment
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Nice To Haves

  • Phlebotomy experience highly preferred.
  • Certification in Phlebotomy is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with receiving, identifying, accessioning, processing and transporting specimens.
  • Performs clerical duties. Also maintains equipment and adequate stock of supplies.
  • Maintains work area in a safe, aseptic and organized manner.
  • Provides laboratory customer service to include request for add-ons, specimen collection information, phlebotomy requests, result inquiry, etc.
  • Performs the phlebotomy function to ensure accurate and timely processing of lab test orders.
  • Completes culture setup of microbiology samples and gram stain preparation when staffed in Microbiology department.
  • Operates, maintains, and repairs clinical laboratory equipment within the scope of training including waived testing, routine preventative maintenance, calibrations, quality control and safety checks.
  • Provides support functions to technologists including the loading and maintaining of instruments, making up of reagents, thawing, pooling, importing, and issuing of blood products, and maintenance and function checks.
  • Keeps appropriate persons informed of instrument problems and resolutions.
  • Assists in the preparation and processing of bone marrow specimens.
