The Laboratory Assistant performs specimen receiving and processing duties, registers patients, enters orders in the computer system, centrifuges specimens, labels and aliquots samples, delivers to test site, stores samples, slides, blocks, etc. This role provides support in patient registration, third-party reimbursement requirements and regulations, and maintains department supplies and customer supply orders. The assistant demonstrates knowledge of specimen collection and handling requirements and performs all departmental functions with a thorough knowledge of hospital and laboratory information systems, including downtime functions, specimen processing, transportation, billing, reference testing, and scheduling. They maintain positive customer service relationships, process pathology specimens, train staff as required, and work flexible hours to meet department needs. The role also involves assisting in maintaining and cleaning laboratory equipment and following established policies and procedures to meet regulatory and accrediting agency requirements. Additionally, the assistant is responsible for maintaining an active role in the laboratory Quality Improvement Program, maximizing productivity, customer satisfaction, and profitability, documenting specimen quality issues, adhering to infection control and safety practices, and maintaining confidentiality of patient records. They perform filing of reports and requisitions, assist with charting and report distribution, read and understand physician laboratory test orders, schedule necessary personnel, and may assist with bone marrow collection and processing. Phlebotomy may also be performed as necessary after approved competency.
