About The Position

Labor Supervisors for the City of Vestavia Hills supervise crews performing skilled and unskilled manual labor in maintenance and construction activities, including the maintenance, repair, and care of public works, utilities, parks, and other facilities. Incumbents participate in the work and perform the more skilled or difficult tasks as needed. Work involves addressing a variety of problems and situations in accordance with established criteria and exercising discretion when carrying out assignments based on written and oral instructions. Employees receive assignments from a supervisor who establishes objectives, priorities, and deadlines and provides guidance on unusual situations without clear precedents. Work is reviewed for technical accuracy and consistency with established practices and policies through on-site observation and inspection.

Requirements

Driver's license.
Experience leading labor crews by assigning and reviewing tasks and determining equipment and material needs for various projects.
Experience implementing standard traffic safety protocols and using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at construction sites and around traffic.
Experience operating hand tools and motorized equipment such as weed eaters, chain saws, shovels, and blowers.

Responsibilities

Direct and participate in County cemetery burials using appropriate tools and equipment and following established policies and procedures.
Direct and participate in construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of culverts, storm and sanitary sewers, manholes, and sidewalks.
Coordinate daily construction crew activities by reviewing work orders, assigning work, coordinating across departments, and preparing trucks, equipment, materials, and tools.
Direct and participate in park and general services maintenance activities.
Prepare crews, equipment, and materials at worksites; ensure safety protocols are followed, delegate tasks, observe work, and communicate with people on-site.
Direct and participate in refuse and recycling collection and transport activities.
Direct and participate in grass mowing and other activities along highways and rights-of-way.
Participate in street and road paving and maintenance, ensuring work meets applicable guidelines and standards.
Supervise staff by assigning and distributing work, directing job duties, monitoring progress, and providing feedback and training.
