About The Position

GSS Laboratory Technician at the Baltimore City Health Department (BCHD) Sexual Health and Wellness Clinics support clinic staff in collecting and processing clinical samples.

Requirements

  • An associate of science degree in laboratory technology or the chemical or biological sciences from an accredited college OR High School Diploma or GED equivalent and documentation of successful completion of a course in microscopy OR certification in microscopy in the field of related biological field OR documentation of at least 1 year experience with performing microscopy.
  • Phlebotomy certification or at least 6 months experience
  • Two years of experience in laboratory work may be substituted for each year of the education requirement.
  • Completion of a Medical Laboratory Technician training program/internship may be substituted for the education requirement.
  • Phlebotomy experience
  • Knowledge of laboratory procedures, equipment, and terminology.
  • Ability to perform routine laboratory tests.
  • Ability to clean and sterilize laboratory equipment, instruments, and glassware.
  • Ability to prepare media and solutions.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and follow through.
  • Ability to perform moderate complexity laboratory tests related to Sexually Transmitted Infections, including microscopy and darkfield microscopy
  • Strong experience with Laboratory Information Systems
  • Strong computer skills and use of email, word, excel, and electronic medical records programs.

Responsibilities

  • Collect, receive, label, process, package, and/or analyze patient medical samples, including blood, urine, and swabs containing other bodily fluids, using the correct testing equipment, when necessary.
  • Execute laboratory testing to include point of care, rapid and other approved moderate complexity laboratory tests in line with standard testing procedures, record observations, and interpret findings.
  • Perform quality assurance on all laboratory procedures
  • Prepare samples collected for shipment to outsourced testing facilities.
  • Record all data and test results accurately and in the specified format (written and/or electronic.
  • Organize and store all chemical substances and fluids according to safety instructions.
  • Maintain and update safety data sheets per OSHA guidance
  • Perform maintenance on equipment, ensure laboratory equipment is working appropriately and is accurately documented to meet regulatory guidelines.
  • Conduct lab inventory, submit inventory reports to managers, and orders supplies when required.
  • Perform phlebotomy techniques as needed.
  • Complete laboratory proficiency testing as required
  • Coordinate with other members of the clinical team to ensure smooth and effective patient experience. This includes coordination and communication with medical providers, clinician and non-clinical staff, and participation in staff meetings.
