About The Position

The Laboratory Technical Apprentice is responsible for supporting technical functions with oversight in the laboratory testing areas including Core Lab, Central Processing, Microbiology, Transfusion Services and Pathology according to established procedures, ensuring quality standards are met. The Technical Apprentice performs his/her functions in compliance with all established departmental standards. The Apprentice becomes educated in and learns how to ensure data validity of interpreted results and laboratory process. This position becomes educated in appropriate procedural techniques related to specimen procurement, handling and processing, instrument operation, operator maintenance, application of universal precautions and inventory monitoring. The Apprentice also becomes educated to assist in the evaluation of new equipment and equipment troubleshooting, as needed. The Technical Apprentice becomes competent in quality control procedures and proficiency testing in accordance with established parameters and standards, working with the Laboratory Leadership to identify quality control, patient or procedural problems with in the section. This position supports organizational goals by providing quality customer service, participating in performance improvement efforts and demonstrating a commitment to team work and cooperation.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree and/or Bachelor's degree in medical technology, chemical, physical or biological sciences or related field acceptable to the certifying agency (ASCP).
  • Actively enrolled in an accredited med tech or histology program.
  • Registry eligible (ASCP) for Medical Technician/Technologist or Histology Technician/Technologist.
  • Participation in 12 CEUs annually.
  • Ability to distinguish colors.
  • Potential for exposure to hazards and risks of the hospital environment, including exposure to infectious disease, blood-borne pathogens, hazardous substances, and potential injury.
  • Increased amounts of standing, bending and manual manipulation.
  • Some light lifting up to 20lbs.
