About The Position

Supervises and coordinates activities of employees engaged in the receiving, accessioning, and routing of clinical laboratory specimens and the electronic filing/storage of documents. Provides logistical leadership to all team members.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Three to Four years in a clinical environment with data processing/specimen handling experience.
  • Graduate of health/medical assistant or similar training program from an accredited institution where general laboratory technique is taught.
  • Must meet CLIA 88 personnel requirements for moderate complexity testing.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Word processing, spreadsheets, e-mail, designated laboratory software.

  • A.S. degree preferred or an equivalent demonstration of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Performs all duties and responsibilities of those supervised, as required, which includes up to and including CLIA classified moderately complex laboratory testing and entering of results into the Laboratory Information System. Provides 24/7 rotating on call coverage.
  • Assists in the development and maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures according to the Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines.
  • Supervises departmental activities and staffing assignments to maintain a high quality of work. Takes corrective action, when necessary, to redirect activities and to correct problems. Monitors work activities to improve efficiency.
  • Evaluates specimen collection, processing, and testing to ensure quality and integrity. Troubleshoots instrumentation and test methods as necessary. Confers with technical personnel and management when appropriate.
  • Prepares various qualitative and quantitative reports and records.
  • Performs and reviews basic quality control functions pertaining to moderate complexity testing, instrument checks, and notifies a technologist with any discrepancies.
  • Approves payroll submissions, PTO requests, and maintains attendance records.
  • Supports Education Department personnel/trainers and/or designee in the training and orientation of new staff members and continuing education programs.
  • Investigates Patient Safety Reports and follows through on any necessary education.
  • Strives to improve communications within the department by conducting and recording regular meetings.
  • Assists in planning for effective utilization of resources.
  • Directs the proper storage of hazardous materials and the laboratory safety program in conjunction with the safety officer
