About The Position

Performs blood collection on all patient populations and ages using a variety of procedures. Utilizes a positive patient identification device to monitor new orders and draws that are pending. Uses critical thinking skills/problem solving when identifying more difficult collections and alternative procedures to complete blood draws. Interacts with nursing staff, providers, other hospital staff, patients, family members and co-workers to meet the needs of the patient. Performs additional non-blood specimen collections as required, including but not limited to sputum and fecal specimens, in accordance with established protocols. Adheres to all local/state/federal regulations, codes, policies and procedures to ensure privacy and safety while delivering optimal patient care.

  • Ability to perform job duties and assigned tasks with accuracy, reliability and precision.
  • Ability to be organized to complete job duties and assigned tasks within expected timeframes.
  • Ability to compassionately and effectively interact with patients of diverse ages, backgrounds, values, beliefs and behaviors.
  • Must complete Laboratory Support Services training and classes within the first year of employment.

  • Responds to fluctuations in volume, unexpected situations or problems such as equipment or IS failure, shift-to-shift hand-offs, STAT and time-sensitive test orders, and specimen integrity issues that exceed threshold (e.g., labeling discrepancies, insufficient volume, improper collection, or transport).
