Performs blood collection on all patient populations and ages using a variety of procedures. Utilizes a positive patient identification device to monitor new orders and draws that are pending. Uses critical thinking skills/problem solving when identifying more difficult collections and alternative procedures to complete blood draws. Interacts with nursing staff, providers, other hospital staff, patients, family members and co-workers to meet the needs of the patient. Performs additional non-blood specimen collections as required, including but not limited to sputum and fecal specimens, in accordance with established protocols. Adheres to all local/state/federal regulations, codes, policies and procedures to ensure privacy and safety while delivering optimal patient care. This position offers opportunities for professional development and career advancement within Lab Support Services. Co-workers are required to complete Laboratory Support Services training and classes within the first year of employment. Upon successful completion, the co-worker will be promoted to a Lab Assistant role and receive a corresponding pay increase. Lab Assistants may further expand their skill set through additional training and experience, with opportunities to pursue advanced laboratory career path based on departmental needs, role requirements, and individual performance.
