About The Position

Manages the clinical laboratory support services operations to ensure departmental goals are achieved. Duties include: hiring, development and evaluation of competent staff, oversight of all facilities and personnel involved with lab support services, fostering excellent communication and relations with internal and external clients, spearheading sample collection and handling problem resolution and quality improvement efforts, and participation in the development of departmental initiatives, goals, compliance metrics and policies as it relates to lab support services. This position will manage outreach personnel, lab patient service centers, external clients and to lead outreach business development efforts. This manager oversee the 30-40 employees who work in our lab patient service centers and who perform outside facility draws every morning, interact with outpatient clients (physicians, nursing homes, etc.) to foster enduring business relationships and resolve issues, and importantly, under the direction of the Lab Director, find and develop new clients to grow our outpatient services business.

Requirements

  • CA Phlebotomy certification
  • High School Diploma
  • Minimum of two years in a clinical laboratory, preferably in an acute care hospital.
  • Minimum of one year in a clinical laboratory management role, preferably overseeing clinical laboratory support services.
  • Effective communication, leadership, interpersonal and public relations skills.
  • Demonstrated expertise in venipuncture and specimen handling.
  • Expertise with lab information systems as it pertains to support services and including reference testing.

Nice To Haves

  • Some college coursework in a science related field.
  • Three years of experience in a clinical laboratory support services leadership role in a hospital or outreach setting.

  • Responsible for staffing twenty-four hour coverage seven days a week.
  • Participates in the development of pertinent policies and procedures to ensure all personnel are adequately trained and in compliance with departmental, organizational and professional requirements and goals and annually reviews and updates as needed.
  • Successfully develops staff to ensure high-quality lab services.
  • Provides coaching and progressive discipline as appropriate and fosters a high-morale environment through the use of effective communication and mentoring skills.
  • Advocates for a working environment that values stewardship of resources and fiscal responsibility.
  • Performs staff performance evaluations, which include peer and self-evaluations.
  • Ensures all mandatory tests, certifications and competencies are up-to-date.
  • Annually reviews and updates job descriptions and standards of performance.

  • Resolves customer complaints within 48 hrs and actively monitors and provides feedback (e.g. Midas events) to staff and management.
  • Provides staff with information regarding updates and changes.
  • Holds frequent staff meetings to discuss departmental successes, problems, Kaweah Health goals, events, strategies, policies and benefits.
  • Oversees and directs the activities of the Lab Coordinators.
  • Consistently organizes and delegates work to assure prompt turnaround times.
  • Designs and conducts frequent audits to monitor progress towards departmental goals.
  • Evaluates and/or implements new products and procedures.
  • Assists with Public Relations and promotional activities.
  • Maintains continued competence of technical skills and professional image.
  • Ability to independently locate, assess, develop, open and oversee lab patient service centers in a regulatory compliant and cost-effective manner.
  • Under the direction of the Lab Director, must possess the necessary business development skills to expand the lab outreach clientele base in a logical, profitable and sustainable manner, including coordination with courier services.
  • Ability to professionally lead and continually improve the marketing and promotion of lab outreach services and to establish strong business relationships with organizations, clients and community leaders.
  • Skillfully collaborates with the inpatient Lab Support Services Manager and Lab Coordinators to ensure overall coverage and service integrity.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and services appropriate to the population served on the assigned unit or work area.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
