About The Position

Under the direction of the manager or director, the Lab Supervisor plans, organizes, schedules, and directs the work of the section to maximize the use of employees, equipment, and materials within budgetary constraints while maintaining quality technical standards. The role oversees department activities and assigned staff, performs advanced or specialized laboratory testing, and supports the accuracy and quality of laboratory results. The supervisor may perform technologist duties when needed because of staff absence or peak workload. The position is based in Chantilly, Virginia, and works Tuesday through Saturday from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM. The listed salary range is $66,400–$119,600 per year. Salary offers consider factors including relevant skills, training, experience, education, and applicable certifications. Successful candidates may be eligible for annual performance bonus compensation.

Requirements

Four to six years of full-time experience as a medical technologist or equivalent in a clinical laboratory.
Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or a related field.
Comprehensive theoretical and operational job knowledge in the designated specialty.
Knowledge of organizational and departmental policies and procedures.
Proven leadership and problem-solving skills.
Detail-oriented, able to work independently, establish work priorities, and handle several tasks simultaneously to maximize department efficiency.
Interpersonal and communication skills to deal courteously and effectively with employees, coworkers, and clients.
Ability to handle client information confidentially.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook, and in Laboratory Information Systems.

Nice To Haves

Previous supervisory experience.
Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology.
ASCP certification.

Responsibilities

Oversee department activities, distribute and assign work, determine priorities, and schedule non-routine procedures.
Interview, hire, train, and supervise assigned staff, including providing staff development through performance evaluations and corrective counseling.
Perform advanced or specialized tests and related laboratory techniques; duplicate work when needed to confirm test results.
Re-evaluate methodology, recommend changes, assist in test interpretation, and determine whether samples need further testing or tests should be repeated.
Check and approve specialized and problem reports for accuracy.
Initiate quality-control measures and monitor work quality for adherence to laboratory standards.
Perform technologist duties when required because of staff absence or peak workload.
Complete special projects as requested, including surveys, statistical reports, studies, and research.
Maintain laboratory areas and equipment in a safe, functional, and sanitary condition.
Complete training and competency checklists as appropriate.
Follow established CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and laboratory safety requirements, using required personal protective equipment, engineering controls, and/or work practice controls.
Answer questions from clients or other laboratory personnel, if applicable.
Participate in government or regulatory agency inspections when needed.
Perform other duties as assigned.
